FAQs

Most Asked Questions

How can you help me stay compliant with HMRC and Companies House?

Our team of accountants have built a robust system of processes to make sure that we add maximum value to our contracting clients. We are sure that contractors can benefit from our tailored accounting services that ensure compliance with Companies House and HMRC, effective tax management, and advice around the problems contractors generally face. Speak to one of our specialists to see how we can assist your contracting business.

What is IR35, and how does it affect me?

IR35, also known as the Off-Payroll Working Rules, is UK tax legislation aimed at preventing tax avoidance by contractors working through an intermediary—such as a limited company (PSC)—who would otherwise be classified as employees.

If your contract falls inside IR35, you will be taxed similarly to an employee, meaning you’ll pay income tax and National Insurance as if you were on payroll.

What’s Changing in April 2025?
The company size thresholds that determine who is responsible for assessing IR35 status will increase.
For medium and large clients, the responsibility to assess your IR35 status remains with them.
For small clients, the responsibility either stays with or reverts to you as the contractor (through your intermediary).
With these changes, understanding your IR35 status is crucial to avoid unexpected tax liabilities.

Do I need to register for VAT as a contractor?

Yes, the VAT registration threshold for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 tax years is £90,000. If your taxable turnover exceeds this amount, you must register for VAT.

The deregistration threshold is £88,000 for the same period.

Given the complexities of both IR35 and VAT regulations, and their potential significant impact on your business, it's advisable to consult with a Specialist accountant for contractor who can provide personalised advice based on your specific situation.
